Fifty years ago, Canada ordained its first female priests. Presumed limitations on the ministry of women priests was the topic of many conversations across the church, and several books have been written about the “stained glass ceiling,” reflecting this problem.
In these past thirty plus years of my life as a priest, the Holy Spirit has continued to nudge the Church. The first woman bishop in Canada was Victoria Matthews, who became a bishop in 1994. Canada’s first female primate was Linda Nicholls in 2019. This week, on Wednesday March 25, 2026, the worldwide Anglican Church installed our first female Archbishop of Canterbury. The stained glass ceiling has shattered into a million beautiful pieces. Thanks be to God!! May God bless and guide our new Archbishop of Canterbury, Sarah.
